Dear Inspired Community,

Today’s workplace is a challenging place. Stressful situations are pretty common in organizations that are facing budget cuts, staff layoffs, reorganizations or department changes and mergers. This may result in the cancellation of the project that we have put weeks of hard work in, or we are assigned with even more work when we are already overloaded, or one of our best buddies gets fired, or we feel stuck because of limited promotional opportunities. The range of emotions we experience at work is enormous; humans are emotional creatures, and emotions drive performance. How do we respond to our frustration, insecurity, anger, dislike or disappointment?

Our reaction to these hard-to-handle emotions can affect others in a way that could seriously harm our professional reputation and productivity. Slamming doors or yelling when we are angry is not only inappropriate but also dysfunctional at work. This is why it is important to understand our emotions, control our reactions, and recognize how our emotions affect our actions and the actions of others. Learning to manage our most challenging emotions takes conscious effort, and the payoff is big. We learn to deal with problems before they overwhelm us, we are better contributors and collaborators, and we increase our sense of control and effectiveness.

Knowing our triggers helps us recognize what upsets or angers us. This way, we can prepare ourselves to remain calm and plan our reaction should the situation occur. At the beginning of many coaching processes, I use a Hogan Assessment. It provides leaders and managers not only with information on the bright and dark sides of their personalities but also with data on their values, key drivers as well as their reputation. Hogan Assessment Systems is the global leader in providing comprehensive, research-based personality assessment. Grounded in decades of science, Hogan helps businesses dramatically reduce turnover and increase productivity by hiring the right people, developing key talent, and evaluating leadership potential.

My business partners and friends at RELEVANT Managementberatung will host a jam session with Dr. Robert Hogan – one of the leading organizational psychologists – in Frankfurt / Germany on July 4, 2019. The event’s theme is “New leadership? Authentic in turbulent times”; it will bring together business leaders, HR practitioners and consultants. Tickets are still available.

Maintaining our composure on the job involves managing our emotions and stress and avoiding impulsive judgments and decisions. It is a key competency for establishing our credibility and professionalism. Take a Hogan Assessment and let’s design your career development plan together! We are as always just an email or phone call away. Contact us.

Lead courageously, Annette
